BArch student awarded RIBA Sir Norman Foster Travel Scholarship!
We are very excited to announce that Chloe Loader, Year 2 Bachelor of Architecture student has been awarded the RIBA Sir Norman Foster travel Scholarship!!
Foster + Partners announced today that Chloe was awarded the 2017 RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship, a yearly £7,000 student scholarship that gives the recipient an opportunity to travel internationally and “research the future survival of our cities and communities”.
In her submission “Emerging Cities: Sustainable Master-Planning in the Global South”, Chloe will examine how the cities of Curitiba, Mumbai, and Jakarta have each handled rapid urbanization to identify how other cities with similar economics and demographics can potentially evolve.
She’ll begin her travels in Curitiba, Brazil, where she will study how the city has developed a successful urban model while handling large influxes of rural migrants. She will then travel to Mumbai and Jakarta to compare and contrast them with her Curitiba findings. Chloe will conclude her project by exploring potential design strategies for urban development to engage communities.
As the global number of people living in informal settlements is expected to rise to 1.5 billion by 2020, a better understanding of these communities is crucial in the present, says Professor Glen Mills, who has studied informal settlements and is the Head of the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Lincoln. “They are not going to go away so, as planners, architects and engineers, we need to understand them and that’s why Chloe’s project is so relevant. Informal settlements are a part of our global future,” Mills said.
Creative Careers Festival
Careers and Employability have partnered with the alumni department, Lincolnshire One Venues, The LPAC and The College of Arts to bring you the Creative Careers Festival on 6th – 8th February 2017.
The festival will host various careers events for the five different schools within the College of Arts including; English & Journalism, Fine & Performing Arts, Architecture & Design, Film & Media and History & Heritage. All sessions are open to current students and graduates from the College of Arts.

This is an opportunity to share you current research and exhibition work & on-going projects/design work through 20 minute presentations.
Join us for an opportunity to experience and to be inspired by the diversity and depth of research, scholars and practice in the school.

Year 1 Architecture – Trip to the Cathedral!
Once again we had a couple of fantastic visits to the cathedral this year for the History and Theory module. Students undertook drawing exercises and got up close and personal with the historic interior!
Jelly Buildings!
This week students were challenged to make a famous building out of Jelly. It was quite the messy event! Students from the whole school came to witness the wonderment! The idea behind the challenge was that students would each have to study a particular building, understand it in plan, section and three dimensions and document it. Students also had to make a model of the building and produce a mould using vacuum forming. The quick project got students working hard in the workshop and helped them become more familiar with the tools available to them!

End of Year show!

Year 2 Architecture – End of year crits!
Yesterday we had a day of year two crits and here is a small selection of some of the work! We were impressed by the level of exploration and resolution in the projects! There were a number of different briefs exploring notions of edge, gallery, historical context and a live competition brief. Well done students and tutors! There was a good mix of models, visualisation, hand drawing, and good architectural drawing standards all used to further describe ideas and explore and test ideas! 
Year 2 Scothern Village Hall Live project exhibition
We are pleased to announce that Lorna Lovatt was awarded the £200 for her project voted by Scothern community for the live project for Scothern Village Hall. I would like to thank and congratulate studio tutor Harry Foley who worked with the studio group and the selected students who exhibited their proposals. Thanks for getting the team together and putting on such a professional exhibition of work.
The exhibition was a great success with over 120 people from the village who came and judged the work. Feedback from the Scothern community were that they were incredibly impressed by the standard of work and the students professionalism and their ability to talk about their projects. The students have had great insight into real community engagement.
Linda Durance from Scothern initially made contact and approached the Bachelor of Architecture team. Thank you Linda! The future for Scothern Village Hall is that by 2020 they will have the funding to build and have said that the work of students has been incredibly helpful in seeing what is possible!

RIBA East Midlands Student Award Winner – Daniel Orford!
We are thrilled to announce that Daniel Orford has won the RIBA East Midlands Student Awards for his Master of Architecture project titled ‘Hedonistic Pleasurescape’ in Blackpool. He will receive the award on the 27th of April at the RIBA Awards!
This project explores the hedonistic environments, which are prevalent at the edge between the physical and natural. In understanding the complexity of spatial augmentation in operation we can begin to re-establish and create a landscape that celebrates hedonism and the carnivalesque within society. This project explores the British seaside as a place of leisure and frivolity, allowing people to escape from the everyday normality. These liminal spaces once at the heart of the society have become increasingly dissected and sanitised by the regulated modern culture.

Architecture Applicant open day!
On the 12th of March we held our annual applicant open day with great success and very interesting outcomes! The workshop was to build large scale models using the narrative of Italo Calvinos Invisible Cities, a series of essays that describe imagined cities, thin cities, cities and the dead, cities and the sky… We also used Charles and Ray Eames House of Cards as a structural methodology so the project required the applicants to also consider structure! A perfect combination of concept, narrative and construction!
Extreme Environments
Year 1 students have undertaken a project to respond to extreme environments with demountable structure proposals. The students have been introduced to Future Systems, Archigram, Leonidov etc etc to inspire! Here we showcase some great examples of the results! Very impressive stuff!
Workshop time!
Year 1 students have been working hard again in the workshop, carving out their casts to prepare in exploring them as architectural spaces through themes such as light, scale, colour and composition. The workshop is a great facility for the architecture students and staff. We have all the equipment students need to work with a multitude of materials. Traditional timber working saws, sanders and cnc equipment, alongside high tech laser cutters and 3D printers to name just a few! We also have a fantastic casting suite as well as print making facilities and the Maker Lab situated in the East wing of the architecture and design building. Here are some pictures of the workshop and work in progress!
MAKE+ Design Charrette
Last week Year 2 Architecture students worked as teams for our first design charrette MAKE+. The brief was to design a transportable pavilion for the campus. We are aiming to prototype and build with students moving forwards! The winners, Team 6 were Edward Buttifant, Zujia Zhao, Lauren Gabbitas, George Gardner, Ashlea Mason, Ellie Stinson, Tom Brunyard. Everybody involved did a fantastic job and we were very impressed by the high level work and really importantly also impressed by the positive and productive team work!
Students building buildings!
Year 3/5 Architecture Studio get involved with building a building! We all love donning a bit of high viz! Andy Earls studio helped put up a temporary theatre for the Paines Plough company. There’s a very lightweight geodesic dome framework with a weatherproofing cover. Then inside is a circular stage and rings of seats made of interlocking plywood sections with a free-standing canopy which holds the lighting. Great experience for our students to get their hands into building making!
Lets Pecha Kucha Year 1
We had an absolutely fabulous day today with year 1 architecture! Pecha kucha (quick timed presentations) on 20th century greats! Corb, Meis, Leonidov, Archigram and more! Tasty treats from Elika Nakamura – Sushi and sake, green tea and mochi! The architects of tomorrow spoke so eloquently about architectonic language, composition, political context, materiality, architectural theory, art movements and did us tutors very proud! Keep up the good work!
Nomination for Women in Property Regional Awards
This week we have nominated one of our year 2 Architecture Students for the Women in Property Regional Awards. We would like to congratulate Lauren Gabbitas for her design for an aquarium on the Brayford Pool in Lincoln. The panel considered the project to be bold and adventurous in terms of architectural proposition. Lauren’s studio tutor Primali Paranagamage, said
“With this attitude to learning Lauren is beginning to develop a particular approach and philosophy to design; a sure sign of a successful architect”.
Good luck Lauren in the next stage of the competition!
We would also like to say well done to our other three students who were shortlisted for the nomination; Lorna Lovatt, Ellie Stinson and Emma Jenssen.
